Former Gov. Jim Douglas isn’t running the state anymore, but he’s still running his team.

Douglas will be the driver for the “100 on 100 Relay” race this Saturday, according to race organizer Rob O’Neil.

His team consists of some of the people who helped him runstate government for his eight years in office: former Administration Secretary Neale Lunderville, former spokesmen Jason Gibbs, Dennise Casey and David Coriell, former Human Services Secretary Rob Hofmann and former Chief of Staff Tim Hayward.

I can vouch for Lunderville and Coriell’s conditioning — we all crossed the finish line of the Vermont City Marathon about the same time. Minutes later, I believe Coriell said he didn’t want to run again for a very long time.

Saturday’s race is a zany 100-mile relay along Vermont 100 that starts at sunrise at Trapp Family Lodge and ends many hours later at Okemo Mountain (past results show the race takes from 10 to 17 hours). Team members keep trading off running and riding in the van, with each one doing a total of 15 to 18 miles.

Douglas has the better end of the deal, although he did have an eight-year hiatus from driving while he was governor.
